On Saturday 14th September, the Cheshire Area sent four ladies to Westminster Abbey to arrange flowers for the RAF’s Battle of Britain Service the next day.

The service marked the 84th anniversary of the remarkable victory by Royal Air Force pilots and aircrew during the Battle of Britain in 1940. This was the first decisive battle in history fought entirely in the air, and it was a dramatic turning point in the Second World War.

Needless to say, the flowers were red (Gerbera, Dianthus, spray Chrysanthemum), white (Gladiolus, Chrysanthemum, Rosa) and blue (Gentiana and Agapanthus).

Louise Jones and Debbie Davies arranged the pedestals at the High Altar. Carole Chia and Carol Baker arranged the pedestals at The Quire. Linda O’Sullivan, NAFAS Westminster Abbey Co-Ordinator, arranged flowers in the RAF Chapel.

The next services NAFAS will be involved in are the Service of Remembrance on 10th November 2024 and the Christmas Services. Should you be in London at those times, why not pop in and see the flowers? If you attend a service (e.g. Evensong after staging), it is free of charge to attend. Before making a special journey though, check the Abbey’s website. Some services are live-streamed too.
